Daito ryu aikijujutsu

Daito ryu aikijujutsu has a long history that dates back several centuries. Until the beginning of the 19th century it was not taught outside a small group of nobles in the Aizu domain in Japan.

This group was attached to the court and hence spent a lot of their time inside the castle. Daito ryu originated in their need to be able to defend themselves in the everyday life, where the main threats were sudden unexpected attacks.

The style's focus is unarmed defence against traditional attacks. In the 20th century Daito ryu inspired the creation of such arts as e.g. Aikido and Hakko ryu.

Technique

Today many different Daito ryu organisations exist that have evolved during the course of time and hence have different focus areas. The Roppokai organisation is known for the attention it pays to small and subtle techniques. Since they are rather complicated and difficult to execute, a lot of time is used to train the principles that are crucial for their execution. The techniques are practiced kneeling (in traditional manner), standing and lying.
