Daiwa ryu

Daiwa ryu is a composition of different traditional martial arts styles. Like Aikido and Judo, Daiwa ryu as we know it today is a creation of newer times, a synthesis of different classical styles that was further enhanced.

Defender: Kohno Akikazu, Attacker: Yokota Takao

The founder of Daiwa ryu was Mr. Sato Kinbei. The changes that led to Daiwa ryu were based on his comprehensive experiences from different martial arts systems (Japanese as well as Chinese). Mr. Sato's passion resulted in a style that had jujutsu as its core as well as a vast curriculum of techniques with and against weapons.

Structure

Daiwa ryu, the result of Mr. Sato Kinbei's development, is a pedagogical and contemporary martial art, based on traditional techniques and attacks.

The techniques of Daiwa ryu are classified into three levels:

- Shoden ... initial level
- Chuden ... intermediate level
- Okuden ... advanced level

Each level contains three series of techniques, which include locking and throwing techniques. In addition, a quite comprehensive weapon curriculum is introduced simultaneously. On shoden level it includes the following staff-weapons: hishigi, tanjo, bo, jo and hassun – which have different lengths and character.
