Yagyu Shingan ryu (abbr. YSR – the full name of our style is Yawara hikoden yagyu shingan ryu kacchu heijutsu) was established around 1600, in a time where Japan was on its way out of approx. one century of civil war. The style is based on the experiences from the battlefield and had the purpose to provide ordinary foot soldiers skills for close quarter combat.
Defender: Kohno Akikazu, Attacker: Yokota Takao
Since its founding in the 16th century by Takenaga Hayato, the style has been passed on to the present in an unbroken line from teacher to student. Hence, the YSR can with full right claim to be called koryu (“old school”). Although this fierce fighting style, originated as armoured jujutsu for warzones, its techniques can be applied perfectly without armour.
Structure
The core of Yagyu shingan ryu is armoured fighting with and without weapons. The style is like Daiwa ryu transmitted in three levels:
One starts by learning solo exercises, which look quite different to what one normally associates with jujutsu. These techniques are called kata – like the solo exercises known from Karate or Taekwondo. Thereafter the kata is done with a partner and applications are taught.
